In the fifties, Swanson became synonymous with frozen TV dinners, as electrical refrigeration replaced iceboxes with real ice. Supposedly the dinners were supposed to be prepared and eaten as the consumer watched TV, which was also a new device in most homes in the 1950s. As the dinners themselves were actually quite small and kind of cheesy, they humorously became a sort of catchword for cheap, inelegant living.
