My question is about the Logic of the Periodic Table of Elements. From my research it seems as if The Periodic Table is built using primarily the logic of Quantity and Order. The quantity of protons and the order of Electrons. So, would that mean that there are only a finite number of ways to list the Elements without breaking that logic? Would 2 separate groups of scientists researching the Elements eventually come to the same conclusion as to the structure and order of the Periodic Table of Elements? Thank you for your time and help! Feedback is greatly appreciated.
@JC The Creation,
I imagine you could order the elements alphabetically or by number of neutrons if you really wanted to. But ordering by number of protons gives you a degree of accuracy. Add or subtract a new proton and you get a new element, whereas adding/subtracting a neutron creates an isotope and adding/subtracting an electron creates an ion. There is a lot more to altering the number of protons than there is to changing any of the other components. The ordering, therefore, is defined by the more vital information about any given atom.
