Why?

This could be a bit of semantic ambiguity nonsense. He takes 'four away' but not necessarily from the shelf. Alternatively the answer could be arbitrary since the bags on the shelf could be only part of the total.

Since you didn't ask how many bags are left on the shelf, there are still sixty bags left.

On the other hand, if you smoked up any of the four bags you took away, then there would be fifty-nine bags left. But you haven't had enough time to smoke a whole bag up, so there's still sixty bags left.

Shouldn't it say "... and 'if ' I take 4 away..." ?
