Damaged hair can break because it is dry. That can happen at any place along the strand of hair.

Split ends are at the end of strand. Yes, they can break off there, too.

@luciekitty04,
Split ends are a symptom, not a cause.

Start by talking to your hairdresser - get the split ends trimmed off - have the hairdresser check out your hair and scalp health. You may then need to see a skin specialist.

@ehBeth,
Do you think this is a symptom as well: I have been getting red itchy bumps all over my scalp lately? I thought is was just my shampoo and conditioner.

@luciekitty04,
Try washing your hair without shampoo and conditioner for a week or so. Just water.

__

How often do you wash your hair now? try not to wash it more than 2x a week and with as little product as possible. If necessary, use a tiny tiny tiny bit of conditioner - never put it on your scalp, just from your ears down on your hair only. In a related way, do not put shampoo on your hair below your ears when you return to shampoo use. So apply shampoo from scalp to ears, conditioner from ears down. They'll move around to cover once you add a bit of water.

If reducing washing/stopping shampoo and conditioner doesn't help, get in to the salon to talk to your stylist. If you don't have a regular stylist, go in to see your doctor in a week or so.

@ehBeth,
Thank you so much for the advice. I wash my hair now every night: I use conditioner every time and shampoo ever 3 days.

@luciekitty04,
You are washing your hair far too often. It is being overhandled.

Re-read my post.

@ehBeth,
No, you asked me how often I wash my hair now (meaning before I asked this question) and that is my answer. Now I will try and follow your advice. Thank you
