Why do original topic posts disappear?

I am logged in.

I go to a subject post and read it.

If I leave it by going to New Posts, the one I was previously looking at disappears from the list.

Where does it go?

I have lost the Tom Petty post. I see it in "Featured" but others are not always listed there.
