Extreme hardness without being brittle is one of the two critical features of an armor piercing bullet. When the bullet strikes a surface at extreme velocity, you do not want the bullet to deform or shatter. The harder your bullet is, the faster it can go without deforming on impact.
The other critical feature is enough velocity so that when a non-deforming bullet strikes a surface, that surface
does deform, allowing the bullet to punch through.
