Longest word

I have read numerous articles about the longest word entered into scrabble. It scored about 1700 points. How is this word entered?

I would guess it was letters added between two long words to make a longer word.

For example, if the board has the word pump to the left of the word in, with one space in between, a K can be added to make the longer word, pumpkin.
