Wiring Bathroom Fan

I'm wiring a new bathroom fan and I have two electrical cables and a three switch outlet on the wall. The first cable contains a red, black, white, and ground. The second cable contains a black, white, and ground. The old bathroom fan had a primary light, night light, plus fan, so both cables were used and each of the fan features (fan, light, nightlight) worked on its own switch (3 switch wall outlet). My new fan does not have a night light, so now I only have 2 features. My understanding is that I now only need one electrical cable - the one with red, black, white, and ground. My understanding is that wiring the new fan with this cable will allow me to control fan and light with separate switches on the wall, and now I'll have one switch that does nothing. However, what should I do with the other cable that I no longer need, just cap off each wire and leave it? Should I also cap off the ground from the unused cable or should I connect that to the other ground wire on the cable I'm using?

My first guess, John, is yeas, that sounds pretty reasonable. However, I'm left with certain reservations concerning the 'ground'

Guys, help

@dalehileman,
I mean there are 3 separate light switches on the wall. The ground wires are bare copper.

@Johnny B,
Thanks Johnny, wow that'n''s quick, while I was still editing !

I gather that the cables had been connected to the switches, whereupon I'm inclined to ask whether all three are spst

Apparently you have a pretty good idea what you're doin', but let's hope we get a bit more help from one or more of the fellas who do this kinda stuff allatime
