Joint or Separate Accounts

So, I recently quit my full time job to go back to school. This is something my husband and I decided would be better. Once I get the hang of classes then I will get a part time job. So now I have a bank account but I don't have a pay check. Should I keep my account, even though no money is coming in or should I cancel it and just use the joint account?

I'm confused because my husband said he wanted me to keep my account for"my" money, but I don't have any money so I am wondering if it's because he doesn't want me sounding his.

@bigcitynightmares07,
Keep your own account.

There are so many reasons it is good for you as an individual and for you as a couple. Among other things, if there is a time that you want to make a large purchase as a couple, it will be helpful to have two good credit ratings.

@bigcitynightmares07,
This varies from couple to couple. But if your husband wants you to keep your own account, then why not? In a lot of cases it makes sense to have separate accounts, and it sometimes prevents fights.

I assume that your husband understands that he will be supporting you while you are in school, and that for him this is a good investment.... after school you will be able to make more money which is good for both of you. If that is an issue, then there are problems. It is best to get this on the table and work out a fair agreement.

But keeping separate accounts makes sense to me.

@bigcitynightmares07,
What does your bank say about this? Without a monthly (or whatever periodical) deposit, will they be adding any fee or fees to keep the account active?

Only you and husband can get that answer. Strangers on the internet are less capable of reading your husband's intent.
