Proper use of "to"

I need help with the word to in the following context. Think of the parts of a wall. The paint, sheet rock, and studs are all part of the wall. If I preface this with the paint is worn and the sheet rock is worn, is this the correct way to describe the wear?
The damage extends to the sheet rock.

Thanks.

@towtruck,
"The damage extends to the sheet rock." is quite correct.

@roger,
Thank you, That is how I understand it as well. I teach adults and have a class that is sure it only means exposed unless it says into the sheet rock. I keep telling them in this context to and into are the same.

I would have said "extends through to the sheetrock."
