custom designing an apartment front door

I would like to redecorate my hole apartment in a 1940s style including my side of the front door. I want to keep the outside of the door as is according to the condo rules, but my side I would like redo it to look like its from the 1940s. I am sure the trimming on the door can be done with thin pieces of board (any thoughts and/or suggestions?) but the question really is about the door handle. Can halve of an old style door handle be put together with have of a new door handle and be able to work? no matter if its from the 1940s or even if its from the 1880s, can it still work? I was also wondering if door locks go like hotel style with card locks, can what I want to do with the two different door handles still work?
