The star in the middle of the board

My scrabble partner was first to start the scrabble game. I challenged him for a misspelled first word , then lost his turn. I was unable to put a word down so I skipped my turn and got new letters. Now back to my partner who put down a word. Does he still get double points? I was under the impression that you got double points for the first word you put down. Please advise
