Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) The box the books are kept in is now in safe hands.

2) The box in which the books are kept is now in safe hands.

#1 is informal English. This is the way that we actually talk (around here at least).

#2 is formal English. This follows the academic rules, but it might sound a little pretentious.

Both are correct, there is no reason to prefer one over the other. The first example is more likely to be used in casual speech.
