Electronic switch revisited

Yes probly could Google it, but faster if I only knew what it's called: An electronic switch that could alternately turn a household gadget on or off; eg, the first application of power and it goes on; the second, it goes off

For instance one major app: two lights controlled by a single switch, where we need only one of 'em to be on at a time. I envision, eg, a disc containing the necessary electronics, to be placed under each bulb, in the socket

Of course I imagine variations where frinstance, it takes two or three clicks 'steada one

The requirement is so obvious that I am supposing such a thing exists, but whaddya call it
