Dot-Colon-Question Mark Puzzle

Hi, everyone--

I'm hoping you can find an answer to a puzzle that is troubling us greatly at another forum. If any of you can find an answer, that will help greatly; the creator of the puzzle had to go to the hospital for several days, so he won't be able to tell us the answer for a long while, and we're completely stumped.

Here's the whole puzzle:

:::::::Confused

Yup--that's it. Eight colons and a question mark. Make sense of that if you will.

Just so you know, I don't have any answers for you; we're completely stumped. Has anyone seen this one before, or does anyone know an answer?

Many thanks.

Seeing as you've posted 7 colons and the emoji known as confused, instead of 8 colons and a question mark, the answer can't be:

colonate

A peasant, in Ancient Rome, who was legally tied to the land, but could not be bought or sold

I'm worried that the invigilator has posed an extensive colonic examination, but in the end all will out.

@ekename,
Apologies for that, Ekename. I can't seem to edit the OP now for whatever reason; do you think it would be better if I delete it and re-post it with a space in between the last colon and the question mark, or keep it as it is? (Apparently the colon and the question mark automatically turn into the emoji.)

Anyway, thanks for your help. I thought of <i>colonate</i> too and asked the OP, Pete, if that were the answer early on.

He responded that the solution didn't actually have to do with the word <i>colon</i> but rather only with the two-dot symbol.

But many thanks!

@Salzmank,
Well Salzmank old son I was originally thinking ( which is most unlikely) that

:::::::: ?

is a word puzzle eg colonate or a number puzzle eg.

Two dot Eight times
2.2.2.2.2.2.2.2.
2^8.
256.

However if it's a rebus pictogram it shows a

2 x 8 dot matrix

So the answer could be 'array' or , in computer usage, an 'icon', 'printer' or 'display'.

@Salzmank,
Some ideas
In braille; :=B and ::=G
So ::::::: could be BGGG (Beegees) (7 colons)
or
:::::::: = BBBBBBBB (Bees, G8 Gate)
:::: = BBBB = B4, Before
:: Gone
::: = BeGone

:: two B => To be
:: :::::: => To be (or not to Be) ?
