When my washing machine shuts off abruptly, the water supply pipes make a loud banging noise. Is there anything I can do to stop this?
Could be "water hammer". Is this a new machine? If it not, and it has suddenly started, this may be because of loose or broken pipe mountings, or faulty valve in washing machine. Consult a plumber. You may need a pressure regulator.
