Probably too numerous to list.
But certainly some of the social function is to help bind people into a group, which is often a survival mechanism (so strongly selected for). It also seems clear that it can be a social control mechanism, certainly for anyone who "controls" the message (priest or shaman or something).
Psychologically it can have profound effects on a person's very perception of reality, coloring everything in deep ways.
