I'm stumped about this "math" riddle...

My math teacher has stumped the whole class with this riddle:

Why did the math student wear a Halloween costume to the Christmas party?

Supposedly it's a riddle that is solved with math. How, I have no idea. He also said that the student could be anyone and the Halloween costume could be replaced with "witch costume" or "monster costume", etc.

Does anyone know the answer? It would help a lot. (and it'd get me on my teacher's good side=))

Because Dec. 25 = Oct. 31?

Decimal 25 = Octal 31

Decimal is every digit times 10^n.

25 would be

2 x 10^1
5 x 10^0 +
------------
25

Octal is every digit times 8^n

31 (in octal) would be

3 x 8^1
1 x 8^0 +
----------
25 (in decimal)
