Life is suffering caused by craving and aversion. Suffering can be overcome though by following the 8-fold path.

Why does it have to be an 8-fold path? Would 5 or 6 folds be more in line with the philosophy of "wanting less"?

(Personally, I follow a 2-fold path.).

Because that is how many folds the path has. Were it only a 2-fold path, then that is what I would have suggested. But, it has 8.

It's like your asking "why does an octagon have 8 sides? Why not 5 or 6?"

There are 8 sided shapes, and there a 5 or 6 sided shapes. They are all perfectly decent shapes.

You are free to base your well-being on octagons if you choose. But triangles are nice too... and triangles have the advantage of being more structurally stable.
