Ceiling Fan issue

I just moved into my house not too long ago. I have hunter ceiling fans in the living room. The fans are not connected to the light switch. I have a Hampton bay universal remote left behind. Hitting any button on the remote will shut off both fans. The fans also appear to be turning on by themselves. I believe the two fans are connected to one receiver. I don't know how the fans kick on by themselves if neighbors using the same frequency or if it is on some kind of timer. I am not sure why my remote won't turn the fans off. Anyone ever have this issue or have any advice. Thanks.

@phan913,
If it were me, I would replace the fans and not have a remote.
