How has the milky way aided in the advancement of our understanding of how the universe operates?

In just about every way imaginable. We didn't even know there were other galaxies until something like the 1800s.

Wasn't Hubble who figured out, that M-31, Andromeda, was another Galaxy ?

I know Victorians knew the term 'galaxy' but I think at the time it was just a theory that there were others beyond our own.

"Milky Way" is a proper name, and should be spelled with capital letters.
