I have blogged in the wedding industry and I have followed the trends. A lot of the 'rules' don't really exist anymore. If you want to, consider the predominant color(s) of the invitation suite as that will give you an idea of the couple's favorite color(s). Maybe you can pull off a scarf or hair comb or shoes or purse in one of those colors. Not strictly necessary; it's just kind of fun.

PS I wore a wine-colored kind of babydoll dress to my cousin's wedding a few years ago. It was the same color as her invitation suite's ink. Black shoes and purse, black hose. Her maids were in gold so it fit right in. My husband wore a dark navy suit and his tie matched my dress. Those ended up being really great pictures as I recall.
