Excessive iron

I have excessive iron coming from my well, 4.0 mg/l, but my neighbors don't. Hose got left on by accident and caused grayish stain on the grass and leaves. Well guy did a sample and sent to Watts. So far, I feel like I have been milked for the water test(185 dollars). My question, what can I do to my well so I don't have iron problems, like my neighbors? I'm planning on shocking the well tonight to take care of the suspected iron bacteria, but I'm looking for a long term fix and not sure if I can trust my well guy at this point.

@Ranchdweller,
Do you neighbors have 'well guys' (as you say)? Maybe ask for a second opinion from a competitor. They might give you a good price if they think it'll win your business away from the first one.

@jespah,
Neighbors haven't had any problems with wells at all. One neighbor has lived there 25 years with no water quality problems at all. When I first bought the place almost 2 years ago, the well wasn't working. Someone had stolen the pressure tank, switch, etc. out of the two guys I had come out to check it out and quote getting it working, I picked the better of the 2. The other guy supposedly hooked power to the pump, got no water, recommended pump, tank, etc. The same pump the other guy wanted to replace is still in the well pumping water like a champ. Short version of the story, I picked the best of what is here in my area.
Besides, price isn't my first concern. The wrong service for a good price is still the wrong service. I don't mind paying someone for their knowledge and experience, but I expect them to use it.

@Ranchdweller,
Shock and filter.

Iron in well water usually does not present a health problem... The amount of iron in water is usually low, and the chemical form of the iron found in water is not readily absorbed by the body. Iron bacteria, that may be associated with iron in water, are not a health problem.

Iron may present some concern if certain bacteria have entered a well, since some pathogenic (harmful) organisms require iron to grow, and the presence of iron particles makes elimination of the bacteria more difficult.
