electrical outlet

Had an extension cord next to my couch plugged in with my phone charger. Extension cord is attached to a surge suppressor. I started noticing a funny smell from the extension cord where the phone charger was. I unplugged the extension cord from the surge suppressor and the smell still persisted. I then went to unplug the surge suppressor from the wall and noticed that the linings of the sockets looked a bit corroded, but not burned. I am going to have my landlord come and look at it tomorrow ---- in the meantime, do I need to turn off the circuit breaker for that outlet or will it be fine to just let it be as it is without anything plugged into it?
