Dr. Carson's statement re slave trade and immigration

Re Dr. Carson's recent statement drawing a link between the slave trade and the hopefullness of other immigrants --- Is there any evidence at all that shows that <any> of the slaves transported to (what later became) the United States had <volunteered> to make the passage, seeing it as an opprortunity to improve their lives?
