I have recently been given a ceiling light fitting from Cyprus. However, the wiring isn't colour coded. How do I work out which are the live and earth wires?

Boy Ed, I dunno; the codes get really confusing. You certainly can id 'earth' because it would have continuity to the frame. For the other two, go right to the socket. For ordinary light bulb, the center one is hot and the outer neutral
