Do I need a comma in the following sentence?

I am not sure whether I should put a comma before "and" in the following sentence:

The compound blackbird is indeed a single lexical unit, and only the compound as a whole refers to turdus merula.

Personally, I would put the comma, but I am not sure.

i would put a comma there also.

it helps to break up the sentence by separating the two points...
