@hightor,
No it's not. This is someone asking for help with an English test. There's only one right answer. Pretty much all of the examples given mean the same thing, but there's only one right answer. If I said the election results are on the paper or that I had to prepare a cheque you would know what I mean, but they'd still be wrong.

The fact that the word cheque isn't spelled check should give some indication that the student is learning standard international English, not American English. Published may well be perfectly acceptable in American English vernacular, but it's not this side of the pond.

@izzythepush,
Quote:
Diction or choice of words separates good writing from bad writing. It depends on a number of factors. Firstly, the word has to be right and accurate. Secondly, words should be appropriate to the context in which they are used. Lastly, the choice of words should be such that the listener or readers understand easily. Besides, proper diction or proper choice of words is important to get the message across. On the contrary, the wrong choice of words can easily divert listeners or readers which results in misinterpretation of the message intended to be conveyed.

It's a bad test. There may be right answers for the test but the test taker must guess what message the writers of the test meant to convey which isn't really fair especially when no substantial context has been given for these questions. Like "Stopped to talk to" and "stopped to talk with" are both perfectly acceptable for that oNE question. The slight difference between them is the intention of the speaker but how are we to know what that is.

@Driller1992,
In spite of what you contend, "in spite" is incorrect.

Despite that, would you entertain answering the rest of the questions?
