I have a stone that appears to have a crust adhered to it and am very curious about what it might be. Any ideas? Here's a photo: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/photo/102031630567506589095/6223404526921174738?icm=false

I put the pic on Google+ and just re-shared it as public. Does the link work now?

@ginnibobinni,
I right-clicked, "open link in new tab", and it worked fine.

I am afraid I don't know what that crust on the rock could be though.

@ginnibobinni,
Your link works now.

It seems to be volcanic lava that cooled quite quickly.

Hexagonal patterns generated by instantaneous cooling..

Interesting. The rock is not entirely covered by that "crust" as you can see in this image: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C3C5jIPVcAAX6VE.jpg

I thought all lava rock was really porous. This rock is a solid, dark grey.

@ginnibobinni,
No, basalt for example is quite dense.

Look at the hexagonal columns of Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, same pattern.
