Hello, I have again question about word BAULK and its meaning in the sentence. Would you help me, please?

It was hard . . . to be within sight of safety and almost of home, and to be baulked by the want of a few wretched shillings . . ..

Baulk - verb (used with object) - block; place an obstacle in the way of; hinder; thwart: often spelled 'balk' in US English.

Holy cow Sweet^2, I get 12 defs just in noun form
I guess, 'faced with obstacle'

That's zero, or sweet-sweet

But doesn't it bother any one else that a2k's font for instance make 0 look like o, l line i, etc
