Highlights gone wrong

So I tried highlighting my hair with bleach , my natural hair is dark brown, after washing it out and blow drying I come to find ONLY my roots caught and are bleach blond. I am trying to slowly get back to blond so I do not want to just cover the roots with dark brown again, what should I do?
