Can you tell me if I used a proper article in the following sentence?

"Some words like X, Y, X arose through the process of back formation."

Or perhaps I should change it into "through a process of back formation"?

@Nat093,
Since back formation is one particuar process, use "the."

Or you could say:

Some words like X, Y, X arose through a process called "back formation."

@PUNKEY,
Thank you. While on the topic of English articles, I would like to ask you just one more question.

Here is a passage:

According to AuthorX, stress assignment to compounds works on the basis of analogy to N+N constructions stored in the mental lexicon.
The frequently/Frequently cited examples are the street contra avenue compounds.

Should I use "Frequently cited examples are..." or "The frequently cited examples are..."?

@Nat093,
In other wds, Nat, 'a' implies a more nearly vague undertaking whereas 'the' process is one well known and understood

However we'd need context since 'The' implies examples that might have been mentioned earlier

t'sall in the (a??) context

" wds t'sall' "? 'cause tryin' to make 'em mad again
