I have two fb friends. They were also fb friends with each other. One day I noticed that each one disappeared from the other's friends page. I searched for each one's name on the other's friends page and came up empty. So it would appear that one of them had un-friended the other. BUT -
Is it possible for them to still be friends but make it appear to the world that they are not friends. If so, how would they be able to do that? What steps would they have to take to do that?

I doubt it can be done effectively. FB is terrible with privacy. More likely, someone changed their privacy settings.
