Hello, I have a question on this. I have task, where it is assigned to fill the gap with 3 to 6 words and to adhere the same meaning.

Is it possible to fill the gap with "preferred to give up" as well? Smile If not, why not, thanks.

Although I wanted to quit smoking gradually, my doctor told me to stop immediately.
PREFERRED == I ...... up smoking gradually, but my doctor told me to stop immediately.

The correct answer is
would have preferred to give up

"Would have preferred" uses the counterfactual "would" to indicate a non-real situation in which you had a choice, which you did not have (assuming you obeyed the doctor).
