When a lawyer (mostly barristers) is appointed a Queen's Counsel he or she is entitled to use the letters QC after their name and also to wear a silk gown in court. If the reigning monarch is a king it would be King's Counsel/KC. The appointment is often informally called "taking silk" and the lawyers are often called "silks". Apart from Britain, certain British Commonwealth countries (Australia, Barbados, Canada, New Zealand) share this system.
