If I insulate only partially around a pipe, do I reduce heat loss?

Hello, trying to figure out, if I am able to apply insulation partially around the diameter of a pipe, will it trap heat? I understand that if I insulate all the way around a pipe, of course it will, but what is the physics of only insulating say the top half of the pipe? pipe would be carrying warm air, insulation would be foil covered bubble wrap.

@je1987,
Top half is better than nothing, but I'm pretty sure you would more than double the insulating ability if you got the whole thing covered.

I do understand that part of the pipe or duct might be very inaccessible.
