Hello ! I am French and during my next English lesson I have to participate in a debate about ethnic groups statistics. I have to defend the idea that ethnic groups statistics are a terrible idea.
I tried to find some arguments : Could you tell me if there is any English mistake in them ?
It would be an oral debate so my question is more about grammar mistakes than punctuation mistakes. Thank you !

"I am Clobbu, the head of the National Observatory Against Islamophobia.
DESCRIPTION : I think we are all here to debate about the appropriateness of ethnic groups statistics in France. I am here to defend my point of view : I am here to recall what is written in the 1958 Constitution : We are all equal and the state should never make any distinction between the citizens based on ethnicity, race or religion. [The first article of the French Constitution, indeed, states “equality before the law without any distinction of origin, race or religion”.]
That's in my opinion the definition of Republic.

I WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE ETHNIC GROUPS STATISTICS WITHOUT CHANGING THE CONSITUTION. SARKOZY tried in 2007 with a law about immigration which planned to make ethnic groups statistics in certain case. The Constitutional Council decided to erase this part of the law.

ETHNIC GROUPS STATISTICS ARE NOT ESSENTIAL TO KNOW THE POPULATION BETTER. I am not the only one to say it : on this I am supported by a lot of researchers : among them, Hervé LE BRAS and Jean-Luc RICHARD : LE BRAS is a prominent scholar in the National Institute for Demographic Studies. RICHARD is a Professor in Political Sociology and Population Studies. Both think that the classification of people into ethnic categories is very simplistic and not useful to understand the society.

IF ETHNIC GROUPS STATISTICS CAN BE USED TO PRODUCTE AND IMPLEMENT PUBLIC POLICIES WHICH PROFIT TO EVERYBODY, IN MY OPINION THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE USED TO CREATE PUBLIC POLICIES WHICH PROFIT TO ONLY ONE KIND OF POPULATION. “Ethnic categories are the new race” would say LE BRAS. I would like to speak here about a study which was carried out in 2010 by the French researcher Hugues LAGRANGE. This study was made to see if there was a correlation between the ethnicity and the probability of committing a crime. LAGRANGE shows that in identical social category and social environment, some ethnicity are more likely to commit a crime than others : for instance, he shows that people with French and European parents are less likely to commit a crime than people with parents from Africa and Maghreb. It was not a nation-wide study but its effects can be interesting to noticed : Do you know in which kind of websites the results of this study are published. Very often in far-right and neo-nazi websites. A lot of people think that the National Front could win the next presidential election : ethnic groups statistics in my opinion would be a very dangerous tool in their hands.

ETHNIC GROUPS STATISTICS WOULD ALSO PROBABLY REINFORCE COMMUNITARIANISM. Indeed, the sociologist and political scientist Vincent DUBOIS shows the great legitimacy of the State to create categories, to set the social order. So we can presume that the ethnic categories created by the State will influence the way citizens see the reality and that it will led to more and more communitarianism.

ETHNIC GROUPS STATISTICS WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO ALTER BOTH THE IDEAS OF REPUBLIC AND DEMOCRACY. Indeed, the French republican model is a model in which every citizens are equal and in nobody is treated differently. I know that it is not a model relevant to describe the reality, but, as SCHNAPPER say, it is an utopia creative of reality.
I think it would be a terrible message to send to made nationwide statistics about race and ethnicity."

@Ziggy13,
Statistics are a bad way to influence legislation. The way to correct past problems is to understand the underlying problems of any group.
Here are some statistics on welfare recipients.
