But I do think of impacts as
on things
English has a considerable impact in really different ways on our lives .
In really different ways, because we use 'in' before ways - in some ways, in many ways, in different ways etc. On our lives because we use 'on' after impact - Something has an impact on something else.

You can say 'impact upon' instead of 'impact on'.
