My brother tortures me with long chats about linguistics. I believe that in common parlance, both terms are correct, but if we imagine lets say, an announcer for panzade's band in a leather mask and bondage gear, this intro: "Many women and wenches have knelt before the Pillar of Panzade and begged to be set free, welcome them into your palace" sounds better than "Many women and wenches have kneeled..." It's not so much a matter of grammar, but of style.
