How can I adjust my machine's (Singer Scholastic) thread tension? I tried every number on the tension dial, but the stitch is still loose and haphazard. I used this machine previously and everything worked fine. Thanks!

Is the thread looping on top of the fabric? on the bottom?
I find you have to get the bobbin tension right as well as the thread tension to get stitches to lie flat.
