Are they just anti-social people working on their fears of rejection by slowly lowering themselves into an online community? They register but aren't quite ready to interact so they cruise the forums hiding in the shadows, taking notes on other members waiting for their chance to jump in and be accepted.
Or is it a more sinister reason? Perhaps big brother really is watching.
I believe that some of the "hidden members" are spies from Google.

Any member may choose whether or not to reveal online status while logged in to A2K; it is the first option under "Preferences" on the member's profile page. Its a matter of personal choice.
Googlebots and unregistered or not-logged-on site viewers show up as "Guests", BTW.
