Shindy - If you go to m-w.com which is the merriam-webster online dictionary and type in onto, you will see that "He got onto the bus" is perfect!
I won't hold it against you if you write on to the bus but it is visually distressing or unexpected to me anyway. Now, once more onto the breech dear friends! Oops! Candlelight8
