I love him and he doesn't know when you love someone..

Here is a question about my relationship.
I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for about 5 months and we started dating 7 month ago.
One day we were playing the "Never have I ever" game just him and I. And the question "Never have I ever loved a girl/ boyfriend" came up. And he told me that he never has loved someone. That he doesn't know when you love someone. He has even googled it some time. And he asked "Is it the same as being in love?".
So he kind of told me that he doesn't know how it feels to love someone. And by that I conclude that it also means that he doesn't know if he loves me. I find it weird to be in a relationship where I don't really know if he loves me or not.
We have never said " I love you" to each other. I haven't said it because it feels like he is a bit scared of showing deeper love. And I don't want to scare him away or something like that. But I just think we have been together for long enough time to say it to each other. Will the day ever come when he realises that he loves me? I do love him. But in fact he can keep saying that he doesn't know what it is.
What is going on here?
