Cable trip gfi but not a standard curcuit

I have a buried cable that trips a gfi, but works when connected to a non-gfi standard circuit. What could cause this? The problem started after I had some landscape work done near the cable. If the cable was hit and a wire exposed to the soil but not a direct short, Could that cause the problem.

I'm guessing yes it could. Dale the possibilities are endless; so let's hear some from Eng or Man

For instance it might be tripped by a short from gnd to neut, might be hard to find
