A question of originality

I have no problem with tattoos but it seems that every person I see with a tattoo is the same as the next one. The tribal arm band, the barbed/razor wire band, the tribal on the small of the back (females) etc.

It seems the only way to be original now is to not have a tat at all.

Ha ha ... common sense ... ok there dad :Op. If you mean the common sense of following the leader ... then I regret to inform you that it never left. However, I should mention that common sense can never leave or come back, it only refers to a set of ways of going about things that are common to the general populous (at least in the way you have used it .... since there is no survival value in not getting tattoos). At any rate that is a closed minded comment because it implies that your understanding of the world is the correct one .. and I highly doubt that. Wait .. I'm way off topic.
The tattoo thing ... does this really surprise you? Is anything mainstream ever original? Tattoos, in North America, are trite almost by definition. I have looked at the choices that some people have made (e.g. every white first year college/university girl bearing the Japanese character of something very meaningful) and wondered why these people don't seem to notice that what they have is totally unoriginal. I don't understand, personally, not caring about what will be permanent etched into your skin, however I do have a theory. (Note this is from a North American stand point) I think it has to do with the incredible lack of culture, nothing means anything these days ... therefore a tattoo can be likened to a trendy pair of pants in that it doesn't have any cultural, religious and hence personal meaning. Therefore following the trend is fine in that thought structure :O)

I don't agree that the only way to be original is to not get one however, simply choose carefully. Find something that means something significant to you and have it made up specially. I love tattoos when properly done.

I think it's possible to be original and still have a tattoo.

I have a small tattoo of a magpie with a ring in it's mouth. Marillion used it on an album cover (Thieving magpie) and I liked it.

To me it represents a period in my life I will never forget. My college years. When music meant something to me and I got to know who I really was.

Most bikers also are original with their tattoo's. I am not a biker. I think I might have just implied I was. I don't trust things that go 185MPH yet can't stand up by themselves...

Tattoos are originally thought to provide magical protection against sickness or misfortune or they serve to identify the wearer's rank, status, or membership in a group.

I've always thaught, we invented better stuff for that by now.
But if some need these - I don't mind.

Actually, I'm not wearing a shirt and my chest is naturely green. Well, not naturely, but the creams don't seem to have any effect.

Seen some weird tattoos around. Some look as though the wearer wasn't the one choosing the image, like they'd lost a bet and had to have that geometric thing inked onto the side of their neck. May be.

Anyway, it going to be there a long time and will be part of the symbolic you, so pick what will be you fifty years from today.

Talked to a guy about the R>I>P> Richardo on his arms. Both arms. Very large. Who was he? "A guy. Best friend then, don't think about him much any more les somone asks about these." But, those are like huge statements, man. (Shrugs.)

You don't need tats if you have psoriasis.
