We bought a house with a machine that was unplugged. Ugly looking water in salt container. We have clothes coming out of washer smelling like their not clean. Socks don't look white. Do I need service person out? Do I need any new filter? Thank you mike

Water softeners run on salt. Salt is not good for your health. We had our water softener taken out 50 years ago.
