Cloudy Clear Stones Identity?

Reply Mon 8 Aug, 2016 10:43 am
I have found several hundred milky and clear stones in my yard. some ha darkened portions or black lines within. most are square to rounded. none are the shape I think of quartz as being. Most less than an inch square or round. If there is a way to share pictures let me know. Just wondering what they are. Thanks for any replies.

@robertsmcleod,
Just post your photo's to any Internet Photo Sharing site and then put a link to them here. Then we can see them. Thanks.

@robertsmcleod,
Agate jumps into my head

There is a way to place a photo in a posting but it's so complex that after 17 years trying I finally gave up

My very intelligent and otherwise helpful No. 2 Son just concluded a visit during which he attempted to show me and following his instructions in fact I was apparently successful; but I don't remember how I did it

@dalehileman,
And Rod our session had lasted some two hours, and yes I took notes. There were about 16 steps I intend to try some day

@robertsmcleod,
theyre hard to tell. Cold be anything from alabaster, selenite to calcite or cryolite. Fossils can occur in gypsum or calcite. How bout hqrdness, whaat is it? >2 on Moe's scale.

Does it fizz if you drop it in a glass of vinegar. Does it dissolve slowly in hot water?

it should be easy to tell, but I dont think the pictures are good enough tom tell accurately.

@farmerman,
The fossil seems to be either a belemnite or a crinoid.

Lord God Man, wish I remembered all that stuff. But I don't think all those calcium minerals fizz in vinegar so you might comment

@dalehileman,
it isnt the calcium but the carbonate. Limestone and calcite fizzes in vinegar (or HCl) dolomite only fizzes when its in a crushed form. Both are carbonates.
siderite fizzes only in HCL nd quartz fizzes in Hydroflouric acid(which I dont rev=ccomend anyone carrying in a field pack)

Hrdness , gravity, streak etc are still valid tests for the simpler ones. We dont need n Xray or some more complex gizmos.

Several minerals slowly dissolve in hot water and you can add test solutions to draw a color corresponding to the major metal ion that is the base of the mineral

@cicerone imposter,
Me too Cis, really impressed with it

I was avid rockhound but now old and retired I often have to ask my BH for the name of a common rock
