I'm a non-standard automation equipment manufactures, in charge of sales and purchasing business. Here is what happened:
26,July I purchased an order to my saprepart manufacturer told him the delivery time need be 1st,August. And he said it is fine.
On 29th I ask my man to confirm with the sparepart and the delivery time and got the answer everything is fine.
On 1st,August, my supplier called me, The sparepart was not ready, They need five more days, that means the delivery time delayed to 6th,August. To tell the truth, I'm very angry. Just two days ago when we confirm with them he says that will be no problem. So I told him that if they can't delivery the parts to me on 6th,August, I will cancel the order, and he aslo guarantee 6th is the deadline.
On 6th August, I was on business trip to my customer. When I came back today My man told me that the parts still not deliveried yet. So I made a call to their sales man to cancel the order! Now , here is the point, you guess what did she say?
"The parts is already and we will send to you this morining "
"No, thank you , I'm sorry, you have delayed too much, now we have to cancel this order"
"The parts is OK now, you can't cancel the order unilaterally"
"........"
"......."
All about what she said is I can't cancel the order and it is unreasonable! She never think about why I cancel the order! It real real make me angry, Quality and delivery time is the most important, I gave them enough time to do this and I never receive any feedback during the manufacturing. Even when we check with them they lie to us!
I think I would never do business with them any more!
This is what happened to me this morining, Monday! hehe

Does your company have a legal department? Cancel the order and if it ever goes to court, which it most likely won't, there should be no case validity to their claim By the other company's legal defense.
You have to decide if you should take this late item. I know if caused you trouble, but decide if you can use it now. It sounds like it was a specially made item. Can you get it from another company?
Did you lose the job that needed the part? If so, refuse the late order if it comes. Do not open it. Just send it back to the company.
After this get EVERYTHING in writing!! The original contract date, AND then the extended delivery date.

Yes , we can get it from another company. I think integrity is the foundation of cooperation. So I set the order to another supplier and they have deliveried the parts to me alreadly.

Not so serious, they just lost my trust in them. For these spareparts, I set the order to another supplier
