HIGHLIGHTED HAIR WEARS OUT VERY SOON

Does hot weather affect highlighted hair. I have my hair highlighted every 6 months but wonder whether the strong sunlight in Spain does something to the highlighted bit. Eventually it just disappears and its not months its weeks that its gone. I use John Frieda shampoo and conditioner and have done for years, despite it being expensive in Spain. So whats the secret of keeping your highlights in???
