The Hill cited an anonymous Democratic member of the U.S. Senate who said at least a dozen top elected officials within the party have discussed replacing Wasserman Schultz as the party’s leader. The source cited concern that her continued presence atop the Democratic Party may hinder efforts to unite the party prior to the general election in November.

“There have been a lot of meetings over the past 48 hours about what color plate do we deliver Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s head on,” a U.S. Senate Democrat supporting Hillary Clinton told The Hill on Tuesday.

“I don’t see how she can continue to the election. How can she open the convention? Sanders supporters would go nuts,” the source concluded.

Wasserman Schultz, who was the co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, has been accused of rigging the Democratic primary process to favor Clinton, drawing the ire of Bernie Sanders’ supporters. As US Uncut reported in December, Wasserman Schultz was behind a highly controversial move to strip the Sanders campaign of access to the DNC’s 50-state voter file, effectively crippling its voter outreach operations less than a month before the Iowa caucuses.

After immense pressure from Sanders supporters, Wasserman Schultz reversed the decision in less than 24 hours.

Wasserman Schultz is currently battling to keep her seat in the Democratic primary for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District with law professor Tim Canova. Sen. Sanders recently endorsed Canova, and he promised that, if elected, he would fire Wasserman Schultz from her post as chair of the DNC. Following Sanders’ endorsement, Canova raised approximately $250,000 for his primary campaign.

A senior aide to a Democratic U.S. Senator echoed the sentiments. “There’s a strong sentiment that the current situation is untenable and can only be fixed by her leaving. There’s too much water under the bridge for her to be a neutral arbiter.”

However, the talk of firing Wasserman Schultz is likely to be a divisive topic among establishment Democrats. U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, who hails from Wasserman Schultz’s state, told The Hill he “certainly wouldn’t let [Wasserman Schultz’s firing] happen,” and Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said he “strongly believe[s]” the DNC chair shouldn’t be forced out prior to the Democratic National Convention.

For her part, Wasserman Schultz has made no indication she would be resigning as chair of the DNC. According to The Hill, Wasserman Schultz’s replacement won’t likely be finalized until Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders meet to discuss the healing of the Democratic Party before the general election. President Obama is expected to play a “major role” in the talks.
